The Finnish fundraising culture — and why P2P fits perfectly

Finland has a deep-rooted tradition of communal effort and voluntary action that makes peer-to-peer fundraising a natural fit.

Talkoot — the Finnish spirit of collective effort
Talkoot is a centuries-old Finnish tradition of communal voluntary work. Rooted in rural life, it brought neighbours together to build, harvest, and prepare for the long winter — with the understanding that the favour would be returned. Today, talkoot lives on in community renovations, neighbourhood clean-ups, and volunteer events across Finland.

The principle is the same one that drives peer-to-peer fundraising: people contributing their effort for a shared purpose, because that's what communities do.
Yhteisvastuukeräys — 75 years of common responsibility
The Yhteisvastuukeräys (Common Responsibility Campaign) is a no less than 75-year tradition of the Finnish Lutheran Church. Around 50% goes to disaster relief funding, 20% to charitable projects in Finland, and 30% to parish diaconal work.

It represents a old and deeply embedded Finnish belief that those who can help, should.
Yhdistyselämä — 108,000 associations strong
Finland has over 108,000 registered associations serving a population of 5.5 million. Around half of Finns volunteer or participate in an association, covering everything from sports and culture to social services and advocacy.

This dense associational life creates an engaged population comfortable with collective action — and a natural audience for P2P fundraising campaigns.
Finland — a growing donor base
50% of Finns donate at least occasionally, according to the Nordic Donor Survey 2025 — up from 42% the previous year. While Finland trails its Nordic neighbours on this measure, the trend is positive and the potential for growth is significant.

Finland's strong digital infrastructure and association culture create fertile ground for P2P fundraising to expand the donor base further.
