The Norwegian fundraising culture — and why P2P fits perfectly

Norway has one of the world's strongest traditions of communal action and voluntary giving. Peer-to-peer fundraising is a natural extension of how Norwegians already think about collective effort.

Dugnad — the cultural foundation of Norwegian P2P
Dugnad is a uniquely Norwegian concept: voluntary, unpaid communal work for a shared benefit. Rooted in Old Norse ("dugnaðr" — help, support), it originated as cooperation between farming neighbours who helped each other build, harvest, and prepare for winter.

Today, dugnads happen across neighbourhoods, schools, sports clubs, and workplaces — and in 2004, NRK named it Norway's national word of the year. The principle behind dugnad is exactly what peer-to-peer fundraising asks of your supporters. When a Norwegian creates a fundraising page and asks their network to give, they are doing a digital dugnad.
Innsamlingsaksjonen — Kreftforeningen's volunteer-driven campaign
Since 2006, the campaign has raised over 500 million NOK for cancer research and support, powered by volunteers who sign up for personalised walking routes and collect donations door-to-door. With 128,000 members and 27,000 volunteers, Kreftforeningen is one of Norway's largest charities.

Kreftforeningen (the Norwegian Cancer Society) runs its annual Innsamlingsaksjonen through BetterNow.
Innsamlingskontrollen — trust through oversight
Innsamlingskontrollen is the independent, non-profit body that oversees fundraising quality in Norway. It operates a voluntary registration scheme and requires approved organisations to maintain a fundraising efficiency of at least 65% over five years.

For P2P fundraising, this trust infrastructure matters: donors give more confidently when they know the organisation behind the fundraising page meets recognised standards.
Norway — a generous and digitally mature donor base
66% of Norwegians donate at least occasionally, according to the Nordic Donor Survey 2025, making Norway the second most generous Nordic country.

Combined with over 4 million Vipps users and near-universal BankID adoption, Norway offers one of the most frictionless digital donation environments in the world.
