The Danish fundraising culture — and why P2P fits perfectly

Denmark has a deep-rooted tradition of collective action and community-driven giving that makes it natural fit for peer-to-peer fundraising.

Foreningslivet — the backbone of Danish civic life
Denmark's foreningsliv (association culture) is one of the strongest in the world. Over 101,000 volunteer organisations serve a population of just 5.7 million - roughly two-thirds of Danes belong to at least one association, and around 41% actively volunteer.

This tradition stretches back to the constitution of 1849, and it has produced a population culturally primed for collective action: people who are comfortable organising, mobilising their networks, and asking others to contribute. That instinct is exactly what makes peer-to-peer fundraising work.
Giro 413 — the original Danish P2P fundraiser
Giro 413 may be one of the earliest examples of peer-to-peer fundraising in Denmark, even if nobody called it that at the time. Established in 1950 as a weekly radio programme on Danmarks Radio, it invited listeners to send greetings, request music, and make contributions supporting disadvantaged children. What made Giro 413 remarkable was the behaviour it inspired: listeners collected money at birthday parties, family gatherings, and workplace events, then sent the combined sum to the programme.

A person uses a personal occasion to rally their network around a cause — peer-to-peer fundraising in essence. Over 75 years, the cultural pattern it established runs through Danish giving culture to this day.
Danmarks Indsamling — and its P2P dimension
Every January, Danmarks Indsamling brings together 12 of Denmark's largest humanitarian organisations and DR for a televised national fundraising event. Since 2007, it has raised over 1.4 billion DKK.

BetterNow is a partner of Danmarks Indsamling, providing the platform that allows supporters to start their own fundraising pages — collecting within friend circles, at family dinners, in canteens, and at football clubs.
FodboldtrøjeFredag — corporate P2P in action
FodboldtrøjeFredag (Football Shirt Friday), organised by Børnecancerfonden, runs on BetterNow. In 2025, over 700 companies created fundraising pages, with employees wearing football shirts to work and collecting funds for their work.

The campaign raised 18.2 million DKK for childhood cancer research — showing how the Danish P2P model extends naturally into workplaces.
